What Happens When Your Body Stops Responding the Way It Used To | Corry Matthews

There’s something incredibly frustrating about doing the things that have always worked for you and suddenly realizing they don’t anymore.

That was Corry Matthews’ experience when she hit her 40s. She had spent decades in fitness and nutrition, including competing as a professional bodybuilder, so she certainly wasn’t starting from scratch. But her body began changing anyway. She started gaining weight, her energy shifted, and the routines she had relied on for years weren’t giving her the same results.

Like so many women, Corry didn’t immediately get clear answers about what was happening. Our conversation covers perimenopause, hormones, food, strength training, HRT, osteoporosis, stress, and how complicated it can be to figure out what your body actually needs when it starts behaving differently than it used to.

One thing I really appreciated about Corry’s story is that she didn’t come away from that experience believing women just need more discipline. Sometimes the answer is not to work harder at the same old plan. Sometimes you need better information, a different approach, and enough curiosity to pay attention to what your own body is telling you.

We also talked about how easy it is to get caught up in wanting our bodies to stay exactly the same as we get older. I am all for feeling strong, healthy, energetic, and confident, but I also think there is something freeing about recognizing that our bodies change. That doesn’t mean giving up. It may just mean adjusting our expectations and being a little less punishing with ourselves in the process.

Corry shared practical ideas around food, movement, resistance training, and paying attention to symptoms instead of assuming there is one perfect formula that works for everyone. She also talked about the trial-and-error process of figuring out hormones and HRT, which I think will feel very familiar to a lot of women.

Of course, we eventually made our way to cocktails and memories too. Corry rarely drinks because of a grape allergy, but a vodka soda with lime occasionally makes the cut. Her favorite memory took us to Italy with her family, including Rome, the Amalfi Coast, Sorrento, gelato, limoncello, and lemon sorbet served inside a hollowed-out lemon. Now that sounds pretty fabulous to me.

Corry also mentioned a symptom tracker during our conversation. You can find it here.
