Why Women Hide Their Brilliance (and How to Be Seen) with Shauna VanderHoek
Apr 30, 2026
Have you ever felt called to something bigger—and then immediately talked yourself out of it?
You had the idea.
You felt the nudge.
You knew, deep down, this matters.
And then…
“Who am I to do this?”
“What if I’m not ready?”
“What if people judge me?”
If that sounds familiar, you are not alone. Not even a little bit.
In this week’s conversation with Shauna VanderHoek, we went there. Not just into writing books or building authority—but into the real reason so many women stay stuck:
We’re afraid to be seen.
And not in a dramatic, obvious way. It’s quieter than that. Sneakier.
It looks like overthinking.
It sounds like perfectionism.
It feels like “I just need a little more time.”
But underneath it?
It’s visibility.
The Truth About Visibility (That Most Women Miss)
When Shauna published her first books, she didn’t celebrate. She didn’t go all in on marketing. She didn’t step fully into the moment she had worked so hard for.
Instead, she experienced health issues.
At the time, it didn’t seem connected. But looking back, she realized something powerful: It was a visibility block.
Her body literally responded to the fear of being seen.
And before you brush that off, I want you to sit with it for a second.
How often do we say we want something… but resist the very thing that would bring it to life?
Being visible isn’t just about posting on social media or putting your name on a book. It’s about being willing to stand behind your voice.
Your Business Only Grows As Much As You Do
You’ve heard me say this before, and I’m going to keep saying it:
Your business only grows at the speed that you do.
Shauna sees this every day in her work with entrepreneurs who want to write books. They come in thinking they need help with structure, publishing, or strategy.
And yes—they do.
But what they really need? Support getting out of their own way. Because writing a book, or starting a business, or launching an offer, or showing up online... is never just about the thing.
It’s about becoming the woman who can do the thing.
The woman who can say:
“This is what I believe.”
“This is how I help.”
“This matters.”
…and not shrink back.
It’s Not About Being Perfect—It’s About Being Willing
One of my favorite threads in this conversation was this:
You don’t need a perfect plan.
You need willingness. Willingness to:
- Share your thoughts before they feel fully polished
- Say yes before you feel 100% ready
- Let people see you—even when it feels uncomfortable
Clarity doesn’t come before action. It comes from action.
And every time you choose to show up, you build evidence:
“I can do this.”
“I am allowed to be here.”
“My voice matters.”
Your Voice Isn’t Just for You
Here’s the part I want you to really take in. Your voice is not just for you.
The message you keep second-guessing?
The idea you haven’t shared yet?
The perspective you think “everyone already knows”?
Someone needs that. Not a polished, perfect version of you.
You.
Your story. Your way of explaining things. Your lived experience.
Shauna talked about how even a single chapter from a book can turn into something meaningful—something that helps someone solve a real problem.
That’s what this is about.
Service.
And when you start seeing visibility as service instead of self-promotion? Everything shifts.
So… What If You Stopped Hiding?
Not all at once. Not in some big, dramatic leap. Just… a little.
What if you:
- Shared the idea that’s been sitting in your notes app
- Posted the thing you’ve been overthinking
- Said yes to the opportunity that feels just slightly scary
What if being seen didn’t mean being perfect… But simply being honest?
Let This Be Your Invitation
You don’t need more time.
You don’t need more credentials.
You don’t need to have it all figured out.
You just need to decide that your voice is worth sharing.
Because it is.
And the women who are meant to find you?
They’re not looking for perfection.
They’re looking for someone who gets it.
Someone like you.
If this is stirring something in you… if you’ve been feeling that quiet nudge to be seen, to do something more, but you’re not quite sure what that looks like yet—I’d love to talk with you.
You don’t have to figure it out alone.
